Head of School Search

Naples Christian Academy is seeking a new head of school to replace Scott Jones, who faithfully led the Academy for nine years and concluded his service as NCA's head of school in order to move to Germany to serve as a missionary and head of school at Black Forest Academy, a position he will begin in January 2012. Dr. Phil Tingle was named Interim Headmaster at Naples Christian Academy and began service to the Academy in July 2011. The search for a permanent head of school is underway and the goal is to find the right person to begin service by July 2012. An Opportunity Profile has been formulated and approved. Candidates who review the profile and wish to apply for the position may submit a letter of interest, resume or CV, statement of educational philosophy, statement of faith, and a list of five references to headsearch@ncanaples.com. The opportunity profile and more details on the search process may be found below.

During Scott Jones’s nine years as head of school at Naples Christian Academy, he worked with a fine team of educators, board members, and parents to build a sustainable model for quality Christian education that is setting the standards for Christian education throughout our region. Scott’s leadership has resulted in numerous awards and accolades including two Exemplary School Awards from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), the 2010 Best Christian Workplace award from the Best Workplaces Institute, and the National Blue Ribbon School designation from the U.S. Department of Education. Our community will miss Scott and his leadership, but we are confident in the future of Naples Christian Academy and will be seeking someone with the commitment, ability, and experience to carry on this shared vision of excellence.

Naples Christian Academy's new head of school will continue to build upon the solid foundation which has been strengthened in recent years and will lead this outstanding school through its finest days, which we believe lie ahead. Details of this committee’s work, the search process and timeline, and the opportunity profile, are all be posted on this web page and updates will continue to be posted. We are confident that the leadership of the board, the work of the committee, and the input from the community will all contribute toward clear direction, a smooth and seamless transition, and a bright and exciting future for Naples Christian Academy.

March 2011 update

During the month of February, the Academy board of trustees reviewed proposals from five search firms that specialize in working with independent and Christian schools to find leadership. After extensive review, the board finalized their selection on March 6, 2011, with the selection of The Dalton Group, LLC. The Dalton Group immediately began work in conducting phone appointments with staff and board members. Consultant Bret Dalton was on campus March 30 and 31, spent time on campus, met with the search committee, and met with numerous constituents individually and in small groups including parents, faculty, staff, board members, parents of alumni, and donors.

May 2011 update

During the month of April, the search committee and consultant continued to communicate regarding the search process and the formulation of a profile, defining the type of candidates who would be considered for the position. Consultant Bret Dalton was on campus May 4-6, meeting with parents, faculty, staff, administration, and board members in the effort to continue to get feedback and input from all constituent groups. All parents were invited to attend one of two meetings during this visit. Additionally, all faculty and staff were invited to attend a meeting to contribute to the process and conversation. The search committee met with the consultant on May 5 to work on the opportunity profile, and the committee met again on May 12 to finalize the proposed profile for submission to the board. The board approved the profile on May 24. Additionally, during this time, even though the formal application process for the permanent position had not been opened, many candidates learned about the position and more than fifty resumes were received from more than fifteen U.S. states and several foreign countries. Also, the board was focused during these two months on consideration of candidates for the interim headmaster position.

May 2011 letter to search committee

Dear NCA Search Committee members:

I am writing to follow up on the recent email from Scott Jones. I thought it might be helpful to provide a status report.

As you know from Scott’s last email communiqué there will be a committee meeting with Mr. Bret Dalton, our search consultant, next Thursday, May 5, 5 pm.

As you may recall from our first meeting, Bret Dalton is preparing a draft “Profile” of characteristics and qualifications that we are looking for in a Headmaster. In addition, Bret will be providing us with a “Scorecard” to use to evaluate candidates. We are hoping to have the draft Profile completed shortly in order to discuss it at the next meeting on May 5th. On Wednesday and Thursday of next week, Bret Dalton will be meeting with additional faculty members and parents. We expect that with these meetings and input from the Search Committee the working draft of the Profile will be finalized.

The Board will make a decision on an interim Headmaster no later than the end of May. We are holding off on a decision on an interim Headmaster until we have the finalized “Profile” and then we will review the resumes of all candidates for Headmaster. We do not want to risk missing the right person for Headmaster just because their application is for the interim position. Likewise we don’t want to commit to an interim Headmaster then find we had the resume for the right person for Headmaster. Thus the intention is to check out all of the resumes to determine if any might be the right person for the permanent Headmaster position before considering their viability as an interim Headmaster. Scott Jones will be spearheading this process.

The gathering to honor Scott Jones will be on June 4th at Center Point Community Church. At that time we will be introducing the interim Headmaster of NCA for the upcoming school year.

We have sent out a communiqué to the parents in a “Question and Answer” format regarding the search for a Headmaster (and this is attached). Shortly we will be sending the parents another communiqué outlining the specific process and timeline regarding the search.

As always it is good to remind ourselves that we have committed this process to the Lord and that He is in control. We appreciate your participation and input.

See you at the next meeting of the Search Committee on May 5th!

In His Service, Rob Buckel

June 2011 Announcement of Interim Headmaster for 2011-2012 school year to search committee and board

Dear NCA Board Members and Search Committee Members –

I am happy to report that Naples Christian Academy has procured a new Interim Headmaster, Phil Tingle.

Phil has been in ministry in Christian Education for most of his life. He has been the Headmaster at Southwest Florida Christian Academy in Fort Myers, Florida, for the last nine years.

Scott Jones will be introducing Phil Tingle as the Interim Headmaster at the NCA event at Center Point Community Church on Saturday night. As a reminder the event is a potluck event at the Youth Facility and starts at 4:30 with the program beginning in the Sanctuary around 5:45. The event will be over promptly at 7:15.

We are very excited that the Lord blessed us with Phil Tingle to guide NCA through this period of transition.

Best regards,

Rob Buckel
